Your First Day at the Department of Commerce

Again, welcome aboard! First things first. Please check and see if your supervisor has any pending issues that need to be immediately addressed.

See your division/commission HR Representative or supervisor to obtaining a temporary NCID password. Without this access, you will be unable to access e-mail or BEACON, or sign up for health benefits.

Please see your division/commission HR Representative or supervisor to help you obtain a Windows user ID and password to log onto your computer (You must complete the MOU form to get your Windows user ID and password).

The division/commission HR Representative will also help you obtain a Commerce Access Card/ID. Follow the link to the Access Card Request form to request an access card/identification badge.

Take a minute to view the Commerce Web, Department Leadership, our Board and Commissions, as well as the Commerce Human Resources Staff. Ask your supervisor to introduce you to your co-workers as well.

Sign up for health benefits: This link, State Health Plan Benefits Employee Self Service (ESS) Enrollment Guide, can assist you with any State Health Plan enrollment issues.

The State of North Carolina has a great benefit or flexible spending accounts called NC Flex. Here is a tutorial which will show you how to save money on both child care expenses and day care expenses.

Sign up for retirement benefits through the ORBIT system. We suggest you use your BEACON Personnel ID number when you register. Here is a brochure entitled Your Retirement Benefits, published by the North Carolina Retirement System.

BEACON: Our Time, Leave, and Payroll System

Please review the tutorials below that will show you how to enter your time and leave into BEACON, as well as sign up for health benefits. The Department requires employees to complete time sheets monthly, but many managers expect employees to complete time sheets weekly. Please check with your supervisor.
