A variety of benefits are available to permanent employees who contribute to the retirement system. They are listed as follows:

Remember, health benefits do not automatically transfer from one State Agency to another. Employees will need to complete new enrollment forms to continue your benefits.

Vacation Leave Top of Page
- Earn from 94 – 206 hours per year based on service
- Pro-rated for part-time employees
- Leave in excess of 240 hours on December 31st of each year converts to sick leave
Sick Leave Top of Page
- 96 hours earned per year; Pro-rated for part-time employees
- One month of retirement service credit allowed for each 20 days of unused sick leave
- Unlimited accumulation

- Teachers’ and State Employees’ Retirement System - www.treasurer.state.nc.us/RET/frret.htm
- Unreduced retirement with 30 years of service at any age
- Age 60 with 25 years of service
- Age 65 with 5 years of service
- Reduced retirement at age 50 with 20 years of service or Age 60 with 5 years of service
- As of October 1, 2006, employees first hired to State Government and who retire with 5 but less than 10 years of retirement service credit, will be eligible for State Health Plan coverage by paying the full premium, employees who retire with 10 but less than 20 years of retirement service credit, will have to pay 50% of the individual coverage premium, employees who retire with 20 or more years of retirement service credit, will have the individual coverage premiums paid by the State. The full cost of dependent health coverage, if elected, must be paid by the retiree.
- Death benefit after one year of service equivalent to one year’s salary; no less than $25,000 and no more than $50,000

Longevity Pay Top of Page
- Recognizes service of 10 years or more
- Annual, lump sum payment of 1.5% to 4.5% of annual salary based on service
Family Medical Leave Top of Page
- Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) - www.dol.gov/esa/whd/fmla
- Available to employees with at least one year service
- Up to 12 weeks of paid or unpaid leave for birth and care of a newborn, care for an adopted child, care of a child, spouse, or parent with a serious health condition, or for personal serious illness
